One of my favorite Bible passages is John 14. Jesus knows this is the last evening with His beloved disciples and that He will be crucified the very next day.
One would think He would be concerned about Himself. He knew the agony He was going to experience and yet, John 14 is the chapter in which He consoles His disciples. He washes their feet and they have the Last Supper.
During the Last Supper Jesus predicts that one of them would betray Him. Can you imagine the hush that fell on the room? Who could it be? The disciples still didn’t get it! They didn’t choose to hear that Jesus was telling them He must be crucified.
Have you ever realized that Jesus washed Judas’ feet? He knew Judas was going to betray Him and because He loved Judas, He washed his feet along with the others. Our God is an awesome God.
At the time of the Supper, they were reclining around the low table as was the custom of the day. The Disciple John was reclining next to Jesus. Can you imagine being that close to Jesus that you could rest your head on His chest? I am overwhelmed by the thought. You could feel the warmth of His body and feel His breath. Oh what love was in that room!
Of course, we all know the story. Jesus was truly scourged within an inch of His life and crucified. He died to set us free from our sins. But, the end of the story is the best! He arose from the dead and ascended into heaven. God’s perfect plan for our salvation was complete.
Remember this story the next time you feel alone and maybe Jesus seems far away. He is right beside you at every moment of every day. He wants you to feel His closeness and rejoice.
