I hope you have heard Lauren Daigle, who has the most beautiful, almost haunting voice sing her new song for Christmas, Noel. It has a line that I love. She sings, “Noel, Noel. Come and see what God had done.” You can listen to it on YouTube here if you haven’t heard it. It is just the most wonderful, Spirit-filled Christmas song I’ve ever heard.
When I first heard it, I realized I didn’t know what Noel means. Maybe you don’t either. It is derived from French and is another word for Christmas time or Birth. When you know what it means, it makes the song even more meaningful.
Of course we have been singing The First Noel since we were children. I never realized it meant the first Christmas. Can you imagine the absolute shock the shepherds encountered when the multitudes of angels appeared to them and told them of the birth of the Messiah? The whole sky was ablaze with light and singing.
Shepherds – why shepherds? Why didn’t they appear to the High Priest or Caesar or at least someone important? Shepherds were the lowliest of the low. They smelled of sheep and I’m sure their hygiene was lacking since they lived out in the fields.
God, in His infinite love, wanted us to know that the Messiah came for everyone no matter your status in life. The King of kings and Lord of lords was born in a stable and his first visitors were shepherds.
Thank you, God, for loving us so much that You sent Your only Son. Let us remember this during this Christmas season. Our Lord and Savior who was born in such meager beginnings is now our Savior King. Give Him thanks and praise. All glory to our God on high – the one to whom every knee shall bow and every tongue confess He is Lord. Praise God.
