I remember as a child when we learned the 10 Commandments I was very relieved to know that I would NEVER break the first commandment, you shall have no other gods before Me. I knew I would never worship idols or any false gods. I would have to work on the next nine but I had this one covered.
Of course, as I got a little older I learned the true meaning of “idol”. I learned it was anything that you loved more than God. Well, I still sort of thought I could handle this one. I loved God and I certainly wasn’t worshiping any other gods before Him.
Then I learned that there are so many things we put before God. We don’t do it intentionally, but it just happens. Sure we go to church every Sunday; serve on different committees and pray each day. But, does this really mean that we don’t put any gods before the one true God?
I’ve heard it said that you can tell where your heart lies by looking at your checkbook or credit card bill. Where you spend your money is where your heart lies.
How many times do we attempt to be the god or our own life? We want to be in control and we only call on Him when we have big problems. Maybe you have someone you need to forgive. Maybe the Pharisee comes out in you and you judge others. Maybe you don’t hear the cry of the needy. Maybe you look down on the person on the street corner asking for money. If you are not tithing you are not putting God first in your life.
Let us all pray today that the Almighty God of our universe is first in our life. Let’s look for ways to serve Him and bring Him glory. Then we can work on the next nine!
